Personal Philosophy of Gifted
I believe there are different areas to consider when determining the characteristics of a gifted student: cognitive ability, social/emotional interactions, and their language usage. When speaking of cognitive abilities it is easy see that a gifted student is not quite like the other students due to reasoning skills, interests, the ability to conceptualize and synthesize; making connections that the other students miss totally. Additionally a gifted student is a fluent thinker and possesses excellent problem solving skills as well as being able to learn quickly. What I notice a lot are the unusual and vivid imaginations of a gifted student. As far as being social and emotional, a gifted student is intrinsically motivated and thrives off of perfection and often show concerns about fairness and injustice. In conversation with a gifted student their vocabulary is very extensive and the student asks a lot of questions because of the enjoyment of learning.

Definition of Gifted as stated in Article 9b
§ 115C-150.5. Academically or intellectually gifted students.
The General Assembly believes the public schools should challenge all students to aim for academic excellence and that academically or intellectually gifted students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor. (1996, 2nd Ex. Sess., c. 18, s. 18.24(f).)
